This month, I wanted to try something new—something special. Instead of just yapping away about my thoughts and experiences, I wanted to include words of wisdom from someone who’s lived far more life than I have. And the choice was easy: the birthday girl herself, Halmoni (grandma in Korean). With the years she’s seen, the lessons she’s learned, and the love she’s given, I knew her words would carry weight. Halmoni shared a simple yet profound truth:
To live a happy life, you must love and think about others first. Be understanding. Be the first to forgive. Sacrifice for others before yourself.
Her wisdom couldn’t have been more fitting, especially in February—the so-called month of love. It was also refreshing in contrast to the world around me, a city and generation that often feel loveless. But her words align with my own experiences. Self-indulgence has its moments, but true meaning is found in love, service, and deep, meaningful relationships. It’s a reminder I needed, one that shifts my perspective from fleeting pleasures to lasting fulfillment.
Hearing this from Halmoni was a blessing. Sometimes, I catch myself waiting for a breakthrough, hoping for a sign that I’m on the right track. But maybe the real breakthrough isn’t some grand event—it’s a shift in mindset. Even when progress feels slow, it’s still progress. My motivation remains strong, and I’ll continue to push forward. Halmoni’s wisdom echoes what Jesus said in John 13:34: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
