New Coast, New Beginnings

June felt a lot like the end of April and the beginning of May, marked by visits to both SoCal and NorCal. It was a whirlwind month, filled with significant travel, growth, and a major life transition. From attending the inspiring Snowflake Summit in the Bay Area to making the big move from Kansas City to Miami, June was a time of reflection and new beginnings. As I settled into my new Miami home, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my journey and the experiences that brought me here.

The Snowflake Summit in the Bay Area was a highlight of my travels. The conference was impressive, providing valuable opportunities for learning and networking. This sparked a deeper interest in data and analytics, fueling my desire to dive further into this ever-evolving field. I reconnected with an old high school friend, which was a pleasant surprise, and had a fun, albeit unsuccessful, attempt at speaking Chinese in Chinatown. After a brief stint in SoCal—an “in-n-out” experience, if you will—I wrapped up my travels in Miami, ready to embrace the vibrant energy of my new city.

Reflecting on my time in Kansas City, I realize how much I’ve grown. Coming from the fast-paced environment of SoCal, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, Kansas City’s warm hospitality and amazing BBQ left a great taste and a lasting impression. I am grateful for the experiences and connections I made there. Despite the city’s charms, it never quite felt like where I was meant to be, given the stark difference in vibes compared to the vibrant energy of SoCal. It feels akin to Tony Dungy’s brief stint in KC, where a lot of good came out of it but ultimately there were better opportunities elsewhere. Nonetheless, the lessons learned and friendships formed are invaluable. The theme of “bittersweet” perfectly encapsulates my feelings as I recall these moments and words of Dr. Seuss resonate deeply: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

The first half of 2024 has been off to a good start. It could be better, but it could also be worse. Visiting Orlando and Disney World, as well as exploring Chicago for the first time was a lot of fun, while rekindling my love for the Bay Area added a nostalgic touch. Some very large decisions were made in my life, which I am both excited and nervous about. These choices will shape the rest of my year and undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on my life. I don’t know if I made the right choices, but as Robert Frost wisely said, taking the road less traveled will make all the difference.

As I conclude this reflection, I am ecstatic to challenge myself in Miami and explore new opportunities, but saying goodbye to the wonderful people in Kansas City is tough. The excitement of growth and opportunity in Miami is palpable, and I am ready to embrace it wholeheartedly. I am ready to face whatever comes my way, embracing the future with enthusiasm and determination. I remember a quote that resonates deeply: “Fate whispered to the warrior, ‘You cannot withstand the storm.’ The warrior whispered back, ‘I am the storm.’” Ironically, I brace for my first tropical storm in Miami.
